When it comes to ranking in search engines, there is nothing more important than having original content. It’s very simple, really. Content is king. And the more fresh content your website gets, the better the rankings will be, because all search engines love fresh content. Now, fresh content can be an amusing term – so you’ll have to learn how to create content for your site sooner or later.
There is really no firm rules as to how much content your website needs to rank well. What search engines love, besides lots of content, is also quylity and user engagement. In other words, if you post very similar content day after day, you’ll eventually have lots of content. But surprise, your content will be nowhere to find in Google or Bing. Why? Because search engines have become much smarter these last years and they can distinguish your copy-paste content from the original content.
Creating original content is extremely hard work. It will take hours out of your life every day easily. And that’s only for a single website, how about having 12 of them? Or even more?
Just imagine writing something – and not repeating yourself too much – day after day. You can write a good post, and then re-use it, of course. By changing a few words here and there, maybe adding a paragraph or two, you will easily create what seems like a totally new post. And yes, most search engines will take it as such, provided you do your homework. But, again, imagine the work you have to put into this if you want to create ten or twenty versions….
Another way to do this is by spinning your content. What spinning means is using a tool that will create versions of your text that for a base to create different posts alltogether.
There are many spinning tools available, including lots of free WordPress plugins that claim to do the job. And, oddly, they do the job somehow. What these tools mostly have in common is the fact that their outcome is – well, let’s just say it may be readable to the machine, but not to the human beings.
It makes sense when you think of it. Changing text in something that humans can understand by a machine is generaly prone to fail, right? Especially when the machines are small and not trained well. Building a professional spinning engine takes time, money and knowledge. Which easily explains why most of free tools are nothing but a helper, really, and cannot be called spinners at all. At least not in the sense they want to.
Content spinning is really all about using a robot (your spinning tool) to rewrite your original content enough so that another robot (Google or Bing) will take it as a new and different article. A good robot can do this hundreds of times within minutes. The new content that is the result can be submitted to hundreds of blogs, generally with an SEO benefit in mind.
What this automatic rewriting really does is just replacing words and phrases in your original content with synonyms for that words. Sometimes, depending on the tool you’re using, it can change sentence structure, or even create all new paragraphs from the original text. Let’s try and see what we can do with a sentence by spinning it.
Original sentence:
The spinning engine will create a version including tags that include synonyms for certain words:
What we see here is generally called spintax, a special sintax used by spinning engines to produce new content. What the syntax tells to the engine is which words are to be take randomly to form a sentence. So, if it says “{Content|Text}”, the engine may start the sentence with either one. The more synonyms the sentence includes, the more variations can be created from a single sentence.
Taking the example above, we can get sentences like these (changed words in bold):
And so on.
Each of these seems different, and it will to search engines as well. Still, they remain readable and make sense to a human reader. So far, so good.
As already said, there are lots of tools (even free) that can read this syntax and use it. But the real problem is creating this syntax.
Of course, you can do it by hand if you don’t like yourself. I’m doing that if I have to write a sentence or two for certain needs and sharing of posts. But you’ll soon realize that knowing enough synonyms for teh words you’d like to replace is a tough deal. Even if you find the time and good will to do it this way. Not only is creating it hard, but imagine having to change something in such a text. Not an option, really.
The other – better – way is to use a specialized spinning engine that will do that for you. And we’ll deal with that in the next post.
